Avian Sanctuary

Spring 2025

5 Weeks

Overview: This project aimed to create an all inclusive sanctuary for a specific bird species, while also considering human interaction with the product.

The Baltimore Oriole

Ideations

In this exploratory phase of the project, I experimented with many different shapes and configurations. Based on the needs of the bird, the sanctuary needed to provide both a space for the bird to rest and get food.

Through further iteration, I found this multi planer model to meet all the needs of the Baltimore Oriole. The pegs on the sides of the structure will hold citruses. The multiple surfaces would make space for multiple Orioles to interact with the sanctuary.

Model Exploration

With these quick cardboard studies, I am able to visualize the form of the sanctuary in a three dimensional space. I worked with multiple configurations.

Material Exploration

Due to the tight curve of planes within the project, Acrylic proved to be a perfect material. With the use of laser cutting and a strip bender I developed some mid-fidelity models.

Final Assembly

For the final product, I chose a transparent orange and red acrylic. The colors align with an Orioles attraction to bright, ripe fruit. I utilized the same processes as before to construct a final product.
